Google Adds Auto-Restart Security Feature to Android Devices
Google introduces a security update that auto-reboots Android devices after 72 hours of inactivity to prevent unauthorized access and protect user data.

Google has added a new security protocol to Android devices that triggers an automatic reboot if the device remains locked and unused for a continuous 72-hour period.
The functionality, integrated into Google Play Services version 25.14, is designed to strengthen user data protection and limit unauthorized access. If an Android smartphone or tablet remains idle and locked for three full days, it will initiate a self-restart process.
Once the device reboots, it enters a secured state referred to as "Before First Unlock" (BFU), during which all stored data stays encrypted. The encryption cannot be bypassed until the user enters their device passcode manually. Biometric methods such as facial recognition or fingerprint unlock will not function during this stage.
This feature forms part of a broader Google System update that extends across various Android platforms, including phones, tablets, Android TV and Google TV units, Android Auto devices, vehicles with Android Automotive OS or Google integration, Wear OS smartwatches, and Chrome OS systems.
Google stated that the update introduces a future optional feature that allows for automatic restarts under specific conditions, aimed at securing the device's contents from potential threats.
The security measure mirrors a similar protocol rolled out by Apple under the name "Inactivity Reboot" in iOS 18.1. By implementing a delayed auto-reboot, both companies aim to hinder unauthorized access methods, including those potentially employed by law enforcement or malicious actors using forensic tools.
Cybersecurity professionals have acknowledged the development as a step forward in mobile data protection. They noted that features like this increase resistance to theft, prevent brute-force entry attempts, and enhance overall device integrity.
The update is being pushed through Google Play Services and does not require user intervention to activate.
